For a healthy pregnancy, the mother’s diet needs to be balanced and nutritious – herein is the problem for one in every nine women in the US. They either cannot get pregnant or carry a healthy baby to full term due to dysnutrition. For 40 years I have recommended Vita Lea to my patients with remarkable results. We now have an even better formula – Shaklee Vita Lea Life!
When you’re pregnant, eating healthy foods is more important than ever. You need more protein, iron, calcium, vitamin D3, iodine, and folic acid than you did before pregnancy. You also need more calories.
Preconception Fertility
Preconception nutrition research has shown that food and healthy nutrition are tied to fertility health in both women and men. Additionally, there are substances that can hinder fertility.
A man and woman should begin making healthy changes 3 months to a year before conception. Below is a list of recommendations for healthy nutrition prior to conception:

-
Folic Acid: The U.S. Public Health Service recommends that women of childbearing age obtain 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) of folate or folic acid each day. This B vitamin helps reduce a baby’s risk of neural tube birth defects such asspina bifida. If your family has a history of neural tube defects, your doctor may increase your daily intake. Folic acid may be obtained naturally through leafy, dark green vegetables (i.e. spinach), citrus fruits, nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fortified breads and cereals. These foods can be supplemented with Shaklee Vita Lea Life which contains 800mcg of folic acid and and 18 mg of iron, which is double the minimal amount recommended for prenatal and nursing mothers.
-
Vitamin D: Women who take higher doses of vitamin D during pregnancy have less risk of complications, including gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and infection, new research suggests. Compared to women who took 400 IU of vitamin D daily, those who took 4,000 IU were half as likely to develop gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related high blood pressure, or preeclampsia. Shaklee did the research on vitamin D3 and metabolic syndrome and have further advised pregnant mothers to take no less than 2,000 IU per day under the direction of their prenatal doctor.
-
Calcium: It is recommended that women get at least 1,000 mg (three 8 oz glasses of skim milk) of calcium a day if they are considering getting pregnant. Calcium may be obtained from natural sources such as low-fat yogurt, canned salmon, sardines, rice, and cheese.
-
Supplements & Vitamins: For nearly 40 years I have found Shaklee Vita Lea is one of the best prenatal supplements available. The enhanced Life formula also contains 200 mcg of iodine. Along with Shaklee B Complex, Vita D3, Alfalfa and Organic Shaklee’s Soy Protein Shakes GMO free or Plant Protein will provide the nutrients you need to help achieve conception.
